The slow freeze-thaw cycle of a Delaware valley winter is the single biggest enemy of a Trenton chimney's brick and mortar. Here is how it does its damage and how to get ahead of it.

How water gets into the masonry

The moisture that has soaked into the brick and the mortar joints expands inside the masonry every time it freezes, pushing outward with real force against the material around it. The order matters too. There is no point sealing masonry that still has open joints letting water in behind the seal, so the repointing and the crown work come first and the water-repellent treatment, where it is warranted, comes last. An honest assessment of a Trenton chimney lays out which of these the stack actually needs, so the work both repairs the existing damage and keeps the climate from immediately starting over.

Reading the early warning signs from the ground
